What Eighteen Months on the Road Taught Me About Less

Eighty-four square feet is enough for two people if — and only if — everything in it has been argued about. That is the real work of living small, and it happens once, painfully, in the first six weeks.

The second repair

Everything breaks eventually, and the first repair is always a bodge done in a parking lot with the wrong tool. The second repair is the one that teaches you something, because by then you understand what actually failed.

You do not learn how a thing works by owning it. You learn by fixing it in the rain.

After a year the list of possessions had stopped shrinking. It had reached a floor — roughly two hundred objects, each of which had survived a specific argument about whether it deserved the space.

Coming back to a house afterwards was the strange part. All that room, and no argument about any of it.
